Attached Buildings in Gamla stan

…What’s warmer? A glove or a mitten?

Attached buildings – call them townhouses or row houses or terrace houses, have been the preferred form of village housing all over the world, for thousands of years. There are very good reasons for this.

Common walls mean less material costs and less exposed surface area to maintain. Sound-proofing is important and possible.

Less exposed surface area means lower heating costs. Multi-level construction is easier to heat and reduces the area of foundation and roof, two of the most expensive components in building construction.

Kaching!

This building style is also a natural for the establishment of inexpensive, low overhead, commercial enterprises on the ground floor.

European Summer School in Classical Architecture in Stockholm

The call on the P2P-blog here!

I got the following message from Robert Adam forwarded to me by Audun Engh:
The European Summer School in Classical Architecture has had a good response but there are places left and still bursaries available.

This is held in July in idyllic surroundings north-west of Stockholm and finishes in Stockholm. Even without a bursary, the price is very reasonable: €1,500.00 or about $1,700 for a full month of teaching, design and debate, all including accommodation and food – you just have to find your way to Stockholm and back.

If you are interested, do please apply. As there were problems with the INTBAU website, we’ve extended the application deadline until the end of May.

My firm is hosting the website on http://www.adamarchitecture.com/academic/european-summer-school-in-classical-architecture-2016.htm.

I hope to see you there!

Dmitry Orlov: A well-functioning group is a challenge which requires work

Dear Finite Worlders, I recommend listening to Dmitry Orlov's interview here, a little under an hour: He covers many topics, in his usual style. The back and forth of the interview is excellent, Including some astonishment on the part of the interviewers, as in his explanation of how Facebook is like animal husbandry.

I have complained on occasion about how internet conversations usually don’t actually go anywhere. Nothing happens. Dmitry says that the only thing that builds a well-functioning group is a challenge which requires work. If everyone has to work together, then there are serious exchanges of information and ideas and people are motivated to do the work that needs to be done.

I would classify this interview as a sort of ‘work getting done’ interview. All the parties perceive the same problems, and the same imperatives. Namely, the first 3 of Dmitry’s Stages of Collapse are baked into the cake, and our challenge is to hang on to the remaining 2 stages. With that sort of …

”Please imagine a new building is planned to be built near where you live. Four different designs are proposed. Please look at the designs below. Which one would you most like to be built near you?”

Nathan Lewis: People Who are Not Directly Involved in Agriculture Should Live in Urban Places

Published at P2P-Foundation on Octobre 19, 2014.

My place Totenby some named "Totscana" as a Norwegian counterpart of famous Italian Toscana, has lost much of its charm by suburban houses spread all over this pleasant landscape. This is a horrible thing to do! This way the beautiful landscape is reduced to a kind of Los Angeles like Suburban Hell! Read Nathan Lewis' essay: The Eco-Technic Civilization From the essay: We don't try to mix "the city" and "farms." Urban places are dense and distinct from farming areas. People who are not directly involved in agriculture should live in urban places -- whether tiny country villages, or huge metropolises.

European village. Although this village is in an agricultural region, this village itself is a dense urban place, and there is a distinct transition to farmland.

We don't try to mix the "city" and "farms" -- i.e. suburbia.

They could mingle with neighbors on the sidewalk. They had something to look at in the shop windows. Veggankere i Gamla stan (Wall Anchors)

English: The wall anchors of Gamla stan in Stockholm are unique for every building, giving it it's own distinct character. Was this built in our time we should just have seen a bolt in the wall, while here this practical detail is transformed into an artwork.

Living With The Land Part 7 - Off-grid Living

Pat Bowcock explains how she left her 9-5 lifestyle to live in tune with the land, creating her own five acre permaculture smallholding, that is her home, her work and her life.

Pat's smallholding, Ourganics Evolving Systems, features a large polytunnel, a flood garden and a forest garden, of which she harvests and sells to the local community. The local spring is used to water the crops which then joins the River Bride and a small caravan and yurt offer a place to stay, providing extra income.

ALL THE WORLD’S PROBLEMS CAN BE SOLVED IN THE IN-GROUP

Kommentar her. Bill Mollison, permakulturens far, har et slagord:

“ALL THE WORLD’S PROBLEMS CAN BE SOLVED IN A GARDEN”

«The Dream, more specifically, was a detached home on a sacred plot of earth in a rural setting, unbesmirched by the industry that made the home possible; a place where one could play at cultivating the soil without having to rely on husbandry for a livelihood; a place that was, most of all, not the city.»

Adventure Playground. . . inside the local neighborhood, even if there is common land where children can meet and play - Common Land (67)Connected Play (68); it is essential that there be at least one smaller part, which is differentiated, where the play is wilder, and where the children have access to all kinds of junk.

A castle, made of cartons, rocks, and old branches, by a group of children for themselves, is worth a thousand perfectly detailed, exactly finished castles, made for them in a factory.
Play has many functions: it gives children a chance to be together, a chance to use their bodies, to build muscles, and to test new skills. But above all, play is a function of th…

Tre økonomiske feilgrep

Kommentar her.

«This time truly is different. We should have learned from past experience that debt tends not to be very permanent; it often defaults. We should therefore expect huge periods of debt defaults, and we should expect to need frequent debt jubilees. Economist Michael Hudson reports that the structure of debt was very different in the past (Killing the Host or excerpt). In early times, he found that by far the major creditors were the temples and palaces of Bronze Age Mesopotamia, not private individuals acting on their own. Because of the top-down nature of the debt, it was easy for the temples and palaces to forgive debt and restore balance to the social structure.

Now, especially since Wo…

Plato's Philosopher Kings

Think modern democracy is stagnant, stifled by bureaucracy and undone by a fickle populace? Plato saw it coming from some two-and-a-half millennia away. This short animation from BBC Radio 4 explains why Plato had little love for democracy, and believed that it was the true elite – trained philosophers, of course – who should steer the ship of state.

100 sq. ft. Tiny Home in Australia

What is 10 sq. m. (100 sq. ft.) has a kitchen and chill-out space, a bathroom, a loft with sleeping room for three, is off the grid, costs less than $45,000 to build and can be moved on its wheels to wherever the owner’s heart desires when the neighbours get tiresome?

Fred Schultz’s tiny house, that’s what.  Schultz, an American who moved to Australia in 2001, his wife Shannon and their baby daughter Olina are part of a growing global movement of “tiny housers”: people who trade space for simplicity by opting out of the increasingly unaffordable — and some believe ethically unsustainable — “big house” ownership ideal and downsize dramatically to create their mini home, often within wilderness or rural settings, and always within teeny-weeny floor spaces. Can We Do It Ourselves? A swedish documentary on economic democracy
